Objective

The objective of the society is to implement programmes that will help in the social and economic development of marginalized and economically weak sections of society.

About the organisation

DCS is a social service organisation, which keeps a broad humanitarian outlook reaching out the people irrespective of caste, creed and gender. The society carried out several developmental activities, sensitization programmes, awareness sessions and trainings to fulfil the objective of sustainable development. The professional and scientific manner along with teamwork by the organisation aiming at self reliant and empowered communities in Alappuzha,Kottayam,Idukki,Palakkadu and Kozhikodu districts in Kerala state.

We were providing leadership and other trainings to the SHG leaders and we believe that these micro level leaders will became the catalyst for a positive change in the society.

Sharing of ideas and learning new skill help individuals to grow as single units in the society. Based on this principle a number of training programmes were conducted for creating viable and sustainable self employment opportunities in rural areas.

Areas of concern
Women development Programmes.

Dharmanilayam is working for uplifting and strengthening the poor and marginalized in rural areas. About 2100 women were organized into 140 Self Help Groups. The strategies of capacity building and awareness creation have been adopted to enable the communities to enhance their potentialities. To this end, strategies like promotion of SHGs,rural product marketing unit, cultivation of medicinal plants, Goat and Rabbit rearing, Rain Water harvesting,Vermi Compost collection and marketing, rural sanitation, Food and Nutrition Programmes were carried out with the active participation of these weaker sections.

Fruits and Vegetable Preservation Course

Since the year 1995 the society have been working in the field with the co-operation of the Kudumbasree and SHG members in Kottayam, Alappuzha,Idukki,Kozhikode and Palakkad Districts.The society organized various courses to the beneficiaries on fruit and vegetable preservation. Our society gave number of trainings to women on various methods of preservation at various places with help of Community Food  and nutrition Unit,Trivandrum under the Ministry of Women and Child Development,Govt.of India.

Most of the participants started there own production units manufacturing jam,pickles,squashes,jelly etc.Dharmanilayam is giving full support in the marketing of these products and necessary guidance to them in need.

Vermi Compost –Collection and Marketing

Dharmanilayam Charitable Society has started 30 Vermi compost units at Kurichi Grama Panchayath in Kottayam District and Neelamperoor Panchayath in Alappuzha district with the help of CAPART (Council for Advancement of peoples Action and Rural Technology).It is found that the products made by the units are highly satisfactory and income generative. The societies initiative in producing the Vermi Compost may be seen as a counter movement against degenerative and unaffordable chemical applications and the neo-colonialisation trait set by the multi nationals in rural agriculture.

Along with this programme we give training to farmers on the production of Vermi Compost at the farms organized by Dharmanilayam Charitable  society to around 50 members using kitchen waste and other type of waste etc along with vegetable cultivation individually with a mission to develop organic farming.

Rural Product Marketing Centre.

 A speciality super market was established by Dharmanilayam which aims the upliftment of the weaker sections and SHG members for dispersal of their products. We found that the main hindrance faced by the SHG groups in earning an income by doing productive activities is the problem of marketing their products .Society undertake the problem and started the Rural Product Marketing Centre on 11-11 2005 as a solution to this problem.

Cultivation of Medicinal Plants

In view of the increasing importance of Ayurvedic treatment the society undertake the project of cultivating medicinal plants which is the key ingredient of the ayurvedic medicines with the help of our SHG members  It is  income generative and  help the protection of these non valuable gifts of the nature. The society work in this field in association with Agasthya Biopharm India Ltd.Bangalore.

    Our SHGs started herbal plants nursery at Muhamma,Kanjikkuzhi and Neezhoor Panchayath.

 

 

Ten Rabbit Village in Kottayam District

Rabbit Rearing is highly acceptable to the community with the beneficiaries are made its importance. As it is less expensive, space conceiving and income generative, Dharmanilayam Charitable Society selected 10 villages decided to change as Rabbit Village from Madapally, Pallom, Kaduthuruthy, Lalam, Erattupetta and Kanjirapally Blocks in Kottayam Districts. Women were giving training and conducted seminars in respective fields.

Goat Farming Training Centre



The high quality breed of goats is an asset to the beneficiaries in various ways like production of milks, meat,and vermin compost. The pilot unit has started in the Societies own land in R-Block in Alappuzha District and Kumarakom in Kottayam district.DCS give periodic attention, care and support as well as training for the upliftment of weaker sections. Around 25 SHGs (500 women members ) were set up  and trained initially with this objective.

Hand Books

As part of the public relation and awareness programme a joint effort was made by DCS with community.The Society produced a number of publications, leaflets, brochures related to Goat rearing, Vermicompost, Rabbit rearing, Medicinal plant cultivation, in water harvesting and food preservation.

Tourist Village in R-Block  

Tourism is one of the main factors in the sustainable development of the economy of Kerala.Gods own country  Kerala is in the promotion for a new tourism factor related with agriculture based life style in the villages named Village Tourism.
With the vision to increase income from agriculture and to develop the villages Dharmanilayam is planning an eco-friendly tourism project in Kinakary village in R- Block-the second Holland in the world. The land surrounded by the backwaters of Vembanad lake and 2m below sea level in Alappuzha Districts.The various facilities proposed for the project is mainly a tourist facilitation centre including restaurant, convenience shop, clean and hygienic toilets, natural heritage cottages (stay homes) with modern communication facilities along with herbal gardens, farms and handicrafts show room in an eco-friendly atmosphere of Kuttanad the biggest granary of Kerala.

Dharmanilayam Institute of Information Technology (DIIT)

To provide computer education for at least one member of  each family in every Grama Panchayath was the objective of this programme. Society started the programme from 2003 onwards in association with computer institutes of in every Panchayath in Kerala.DIIT  has given literacy training for 5380 members and 45 disabled including tribals in 164 Grama Panchayath.

  fully computerised Information Centre is working at the Head office in Kurichy to make aware the community about Govt.programmes and schemes.
